This article aims to investigate the being foundation of early modern English aristocrats represented in The White Devil in relations to the Other that Sartre insists. Sartre indicates that my subjectivity should be based on being-as-object through the Other-looking-at-me and his transcendence, conflicting Other’s and my looking. Sartre claims two attitudes forward the Other, that is, love, language, masochism, and indifference, desire, hate, sadism.
In The White Devil there are two aristocrats, Brachiano and his brother-in-law, Francisco, who are undergoing the social class crisis, due to social mobility. Brachiano and Vittoria experience a series of problems such as Vitoria’s trial, their marriage, and Brachiano’s poison. At first Brachiano’s love for Vittoria is subjection, which maintains his being-as-object through Vittoria’s freedom and transcendence which is looking at him. Later during the incidents, Brachiano’s love becomes instable, confronting with the limits of class unconsciously. As Brachiano’ subjectivity is based on himself-as-object and loses his freedom, his being based on masochism cannot help failing.
On the contrary, Francisco has a sadism characteristic that utilizes others as an instrument for his freedom. To revenge he disguises and uses Lodovico and Gasparo. His blindness to Others is anxiety, and he keeps indifference to Others. However hard he tries his terrifying narcissism, he can’t avoid anxiety from Other’s looking.
In conclusion, their attitudes toward the Other of Brachiano and Francisco are different but their subjectivity is unstable because of the reciprocal recognition lack of Other’s existence. It is argued that Sartre’s phenomenological approach that subjectivity can be formed in the conflict’s relation with Other, is a timely theme in interpreting the existential investigation in The White Devil.
