(Background and Purpose) Taking notice of the environmental impact on urban densification due to the recently promoted multi-dimensional development at the space above an existing road, this design proposes an alternative architectural design. It applies a genetic algorithm for optimization to minimize the environmental impacts on the neighboring area. To that end, an example with certain conditions is set and a building design is derived using a genetic algorithm for optimization linked with environmental data. (Method) The area above the multi-dimensional intersection with an urban context is selected as an example and a plan for the whole building is derived based on the optimized form linked to the building and the surrounding solar radiation conditions. Rhino and Grasshopper, which are parametric design tools; Ladybug, which is an environmental analysis add-on; and Galapagos, which is a genetic algorithm add-on, are used. The Energy Plus Weather (EPW) Data, provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, is also used. First, through shadow analysis, an architectural form that minimizes shadow on road surfaces and adjacent areas by the building is derived. Second, another form adjusted to optimize the solar radiation on the building's own envelope is derived. This form provides an appropriate level of fenestration responding to the solar radiation level by calculating the optimum positions and sizes of the openings based on the Diagrid Module Paneling. (Results) The derived design includes architectural proposals that respond to the diverse requirements of the multi-dimensional development selected as an example, as well as the architectural form and envelope. First, through the building form and envelope design derived from the optimization, the negative effects on the surrounding environment that may appear due to the multi-dimensional development above the road are minimized. While maintaining the existing road functions, continuous pedestrian circulation from each traffic island is enabled to reconnect the disconnected communities, and diverse cultural programs and exhibition/commercial programs are performed. Through the foregoing, a physically, environmentally, and socio-economically feasible plan for multi-dimensional development was derived. (Conclusions) Through the grafting of the design processes using environmental data, the possibility of a new environment-based design method that responds to concerns about the urban densification due to multi-dimensional development from the environmental perspective is presented.
