(Background and Purpose) This design focuses on the social concerns about the energy efficiency exposed by the glass panel curtain wall building and proposes a novel green architectural design alternative using the optimization genetic algorithm. To do this, we set up an example to give a specific condition and derive a new building design that reflects the computation result derived from the optimization genetic algorithm based on the environmental data. (Method) As an example, we select the old glass panels curtain wall buildings surrounded by adjacent buildings and draw up a renovation plan for the buildings, focusing on the exterior design to improve the energy performance of the building. To this end, we use Rhino, Grasshopper, which are the parametric (computer software) design tools most commonly used by architects, and Ladybug, an add-on for environmental analysis, and the Galapagos genetic algorithm add-on. First, through the ladybug, we identify the area of different the solar radiation levels that reflects the influence of each facades’orientation and the neighboring buildings, and use it as a scope to determine the further shading design. The proposed envelope is based on the unitized curtain wall system integrated with the exterior shading device with BIPV and reflects the computation results of the optimum angle and depth of the shading unit derived from Galapagos that provides an appropriate level of screening solar radiation to respond. (Results) The proposed design includes architectural alternatives to address the various problems of example building selected, as well as the most important envelope design. First, by introducing a glass curtain wall system with an exterior shading system derived from the optimization genetic algorithm, the building become to have an optimized envelope suitable for each application range of the radiation conditions. It also introduces a central ventilation space vertically penetrating the entire building section with the greatest change, and suggests a horizontal open space to induce natural ventilation of the interior space by collaborating with the central vent. Improve work environments by suggesting space for various programs, events and respond to new program changes required in contemporary office buildings. (Conclusions) In this way, we are confronted with the arbitrary decision making by architects in the past, overcoming the limitations of the traditional way of design which relies on the professional environmental analysis service, and further utilizing the effective environmental data pursuing objectivity through the data base design we come to present the possibility of a novel optimization green architectural design methodology.
