This paper has a purpose to show Lawrence’s try to understand the secret of universe and human being to be living wholeness in the modern world. The poet is a figure of the Holy Ghost within each human being, the narrator of Birds, Beasts and Flowers as well as readers. The Holy Ghost must shatter the ego just as it cracks open the seed. The result is openness and dark knowledge. If countries, societies, and conceptual schemata are indeed living entities, then they too will undergo allotropic transformations parallel to the cycle of seasons, the ripening and decay of the fruit. America may be the new world, the tomb of the old “white” mode of being and the womb of the new “dark” consciousness and the cradle of dark knowledge. “Cypresses” is the speaker’s attempt to understand and convey “The undeliverable secret,/ Dead with a dead race and a dead speech”―the secret of the Etruscan― that he sees embodied in the cypress trees. The secret is dead because the civilization that succeeded the Etruscans, the Roman is like its modern American counterpart, mechanistic. The almond trees, emblem of Etruscan civilization, is “in exile, in the iron age,” enveloped in iron against the exile, against the ages. The tree’s heart is broken by the Gethsemane of winter, reduced its essence. But out of this allotropic reduction comes its allotropic rebirth; because of its “broken heart,” ― it continues to transform. The tortoises serve as a bridge between the plant world and the human world, enabling the speaker to find the true counterparts in the human psyche of the allotropic transformation in the vegetable world.
