The narrative motif in the film takes simultaneously a literary meaning of the basic unit of action and the musical dimension of the repetition and variation, peculiar to the musical motif, with its visual figuration. This quality of the narrative motif raises the subject of rhythm neglected in the studies of the narrative. Firstly, I clarify specific aspects of the narrative motif in the film, and analyze modes of dynamic change of the function of the libre and static motif which is redundant and useless for the development of the narrative. Furthermore, I examine a phatic function of the libre motif as a catalysis of the narrative, which maintains contact between the text and the viewer, and the transversal experience of the text other than its linear structure. I suggest thus that the redundant narrative motif can be considered as a unit of the articulation of the rhythm of the text, similar to a protuberance of the text, as it creates a particular movement within the fluid text.
