Dark Tourism is a lesson from the painful history of the past while visiting dark past events or disaster areas. This study sought to define concepts academically based on literature research on dark tourism, which has recently emerged as a new trend in Korean tourism, and to provide an opportunity through exploratory consideration. The term “darktourism” was first used by Lennon and Polly (1996), and was studied to explain the attractiveness of visitors to tourist sites related to deaths and disasters. For Lennon and Polly, dark tourism implies postmodernism-global communication technology, anxiety and doubt about modernization business, and tourism by commercialization. On the other hand, Seaton (2001) and Asworth (2004) argued that dark tourism should not be limited to postmodern events. In historical interest, dark tourism should be centered on attractions and places related to death, violence and crimes against humanity." In other words, dark tourism should include visits to related events that took place with postmodernism." There has been a phenomenon of visiting places related to death or disaster for a long time, but not much research has been done on this. The dark tourism of this study has been defined as a trip to places related to death, disaster, violent behavior, tragedy, death scene, postmodernism and crimes against humanity, looking into the prospects of dark tourism development in Korea.
