This study aims to examine the interrelation between Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon (stone battle) that are intangible heritages in Seoul and illuminate the values of these vanishing intangible heritages and their significance in the history of martial arts. Both being a type of mock fight, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon are interrelated and share synchrony as seasonal customs in Seoul. In other words, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon are interrelated as they were born from and grown among the public and were temporally and spatially disseminated in diachronic flows. First, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon were annual mock fight rituals between two villages that took place in a regular venue on certain days, for example the first full moon of the lunar year. Second, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon took place in Sajikgol, Yugakgol, Samcheongdong, Okdong, Insadong, Gurigae, Manrihyeon, areas inside the three gates of Seoul, Wangsimni, Mohwagwan, Aeogae, Mapo (near Mapo Bridge), Seogang, Yanghwajin, Hangangjin, Wausan (in Mapo), Yongsangang (in Yongsan), and areas out of the three gates.Third, Seokjeon was initially played by the royals in the early Joseon Dynasty. It was then disseminated among the public over time. Fourth, social status-wise, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon were played by the young and old, peddlers, members of the Independence Club, thugs, gangs, low-rank military officers, members of Byeolgigun troops, and police officers. Fifth, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon was a bare-handed mock fight, and Seokjeon was a mock fight using stones, clubs (sticks and six-sided clubs), and slings. Sixth, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon were a martial, fierce melee that occasionally resulted in fatalities. Seventh, Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon were seasonal customs to wish for rich harvest. Gyeollyeon Taekkyeon and Seokjeon served as a haven to resolve conflicts between groups.
