Recently, there has been considerable debate about the impacts of Digital Technology Competitiveness on trade costs, and the debates increasingly became internationally important issues. For this reason, this paper aims to look at the impacts of the effect of Digital Technology Competitiveness on Trade Costs by using the gravity model, widely used for empirical research on trade between countries. This study considered two variables for digital technology competitiveness: broadband database and the ICT Access and Usage by Businesses. The analysis shows that the effects of the two different kinds of Digital Technology Competitiveness are different. As a result of the analysis, the effect of reducing on Trade Cost of the broadband database was confirmed. On the other hand, the ICT Access and Usage by Businesses increases on Trade Costs. Based on these results, this study raises the need for an overall review of the use of digital technology.

디지털 기술(digital technologies)의 획기적인 발전과 확산은 디지털 무역(digital Trade)의 비중을 높이는 등 교역환경에 많은 변화를 이끌었다. 특히, 무역구조의 변화는 무역비용에 직접적인 영향을 미치게 될 것이 예상되는바 그 영향력에 대한 실증적 규명이 필요한 시점이다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 본 연구는 디지털 기술경쟁력이 무역비용에 미치는 영향을 실증 분석하여 디지털 기술이 무역에 미치는 효과를 검증한다. ‘무역비용’이 국제무역의 저해요인으로 주목하고 있는 주제임에도 불구하고, 실제로 관찰할 수 없어 구체적인 자료가 부재한 이유로 실증적 연구는 많이 시도되지 못하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 무역비용을 직접 추정하여 실증분석 자료로 활용하였다. 본 연구는 국제무역의 패턴을 설명하는 대표적인 모형인 중력모형을 활용하여 디지털 기술경쟁력이 무역비용에 미치는 영향을 실증분석하였다. 디지털 기술경쟁력을 나타내는 변수로는 광대역 데이터베이스규모와 비스니스 부문 디지털 기술 활용성을 활용하였으며, 분석결과 두 변수 모두 무역비용에 직접적인 영향을 미치고 있으나 그 영향은 반대인 것으로 나타났다. 광대역 데이터베이스의 구축이 잘 되어 있는 경우 무역비용이 감소하는 긍정적 효과가 나타난 반면, 기업의 디지털 기술 활용성은 무역비용을 다소 증가시키고 있었다. 이 같은 결과를 토대로 본 연구는 디지털 기술 활용내용에 대한 전반적 검토의 필요성을 제기한다. 동시에 기업의 규모별 디지털 기술 활용수준과 능력에 큰 차이가 존재할 수 있는 점을 감안하여 보다 세분화된 연구 설계를 바탕으로 한 추가분석을 계획하고 있음을 밝혀둔다.
