This paper is written to illuminate the purpose of Cao Pi’s erecting the “Memorial Stone of Grand Feast” after practicing the ceremony of Grand Feast in his hometown in Qiao in August 220. Following Cao Cao’s death, Cao Pi was enthroned as Emperor through the enthronement as King of Wei. Nevertheless, he had to go through many complexities until he truly secured his royal position as his father’s heir. Though he was the oldest son of Empress Dowager Bian, he had to work for Cao Cao’s approval as his heir through fierce competition against his younger brother Cao Zhi who was distinguished in literary talent. While Cao Cao remained undecided, the conflicts over the installation of the royal prince persisted for almost 10 years. As a result, there arose conflicts between Cao Pi’s supporter group and Cao Zhi’s support group.
Cao Pi’s enthronement meant collapse of Cao Zhi’s supporters. As a coincidence, they were mostly from Qiao and Pei regions, and their purge caused agitation among the local military power group from these regions. To Cao Pi, who was dreaming to generate a stabilized emperor’s power, it must have been a burden. Therefore, it is reasonable to suppose that, during his southward journey for invasion just before his enthronement as the emperor, Cao Pi needed to appease agitations among those from Qiao and Pei regions by offering the ceremony of Grand Feast in his hometown. In other words, behind the Memorial Stone of Grand Feast, there was a reason for Cao Pi’s visit to his hometown before his abdication of the throne, offering the ceremony of Grand Feast.
