The word 越 in The Book of Document is unique in that it is not only used as its original verbal meaning (‘to leap over’), but also frequently used as a function word with a wide range of usages. There are as many as 63 occurrences of 越 in the New Text 金文 version. Its usages as a function word include allative (indicates the goal of motion), locative, noun-phrase conjunction, sentential connector, and so on. The functional diversity of 越in this text is very distinctive from 越 in other archaic Chinese texts in which it appears only scantily as a verb or as a proper noun.
So far, the interpretation of the usages of 越 and the account regarding the interrelationship among its usages have not been satisfactory. This study aims to figure out the various usages of 越, explain the inter-relationship among them, and finally draw a semantic map that shows the development and extension of its usages.
The validity of the grammaticalization path of 越 from a verb into a preposition or a conjunction is strengthened by providing similar cases in Chinese itself and in many other world’s languages. For instance, 越 as a noun-phrase conjunction (NP-AND in short, e.g. 大誥爾多邦越爾御事) originated from its allative usage via a possible intermediate stage of additive (interpreted as ‘also,’ ‘as well’ in English). Examples of NP-ANDs that derived through a similar grammaticalization path include 于, 暨, and 及 in Archaic Chinese. 越 as a sentence connector (e.g. 殷遂喪, 越至于今) developed from its verbal usage ‘to leap over’, which is in concordance with the tendency that verbs of coming and going frequently develop into sentence connectors in many other languages, as is already suggested by Heine & Kuteva (2002:68-9, 155-6).
