Report Errors
Landscapes are formed through the interaction between nature and human beings and so they reflect local cultures. However, as landscapes often undergo irreversible changes in the name of development, local cultures can be seriously affected and even disappear. Based on the concept of landscape and its extended understanding, this paper will draw attention to island landscapes and discuss the necessary directions for future research on island landscapes. Although often not distinguished from seascapes, it is desirable to understand island landscapes as an extended concept because they coexist with seascapes and actually form unique terrestrial elements in an otherwise solely marine environment. Compared to mainland landscapes, island landscapes are more sensitive to social and economic changes in terms of cultural impact. Therefore, there is an urgent need for research to understand socioeconomically induced changes to island landscapes and their related cultures. In addition, the valuation of island landscapes as resources should go well beyond merely assessing scenic features, and landscape management and planning should consider the culture of island residents in order to sustain landscape identities of islands.
