Undergarments are considered as important as outer garments because undergarments are worn in direct contact with skin and create shapes and silhouettes. Women’s undergarments create the reversed curved pot shape of the traditional formal dress. After the 1920s, however, undergarment has been simplified. Thus an underskirt had a vest, which is called Jokki-heori, attached to a waistline of a skirt. The current underskirt is worn beneath the traditional Hanbok to add volume to a skirt and is constructed with a wide, stiff layer. This underskirt cannot create a natural silhouette and cannot make the shape of traditional Hanbok. In addition, it is uncomfortable and hard to maintain because of the properties of materials. The purpose of this study was to improve a level of comfort while maintaining the traditional Hanbok silhouette, and thus this study suggested the possibilities of maintaining the traditional beauty of Hanbok in a world of rapid change. Therefore, two underskirts for a traditional Hanbok and two underskirts for a contemporary Hanbok were designed. The concept of Baekbi, which is used to build the shape of Daesyum-chima(underskirt), incorporated a horsehair petticoat to improve functionality, comfort, care, and maintenance. There has been a growing interest in the traditional Korean Hanbok as well as the traditional Korean underskirt. This study contributes to improving aesthetics and functionality underskirts for Hanbok.
