Sillayesulpumjeonlamhoe(Silla Art Exhibition) was held from 15 September to 3 November 1929 at Daegusangpumjinyeolso(Daegu Merchandise Display Hall). The exhibition is important because it is directly related with Choseon Exhibition, a national project of Imperial Japan. In addition, the exhibition is specially themed on Silla, so it can be another feature of the exhibition.
Daegu, the host city of the exhibition, was one of a representative colonial city of Japanese imperialism. Based on its abundant commercial capital, an active antique trading market was formed in Daegu and it became one of a background that could hold the exhibition. Visitors heading Gyeongseong to watch Choseon Exhibition were main target of the exhibition and several japanese collectors in Daegu and surrounding area of province participated in the exhibition. Also, it is noteworthy that the expression ‘卽賣’ was used in exhibition articles published in newspapers. That means exhibits, maybe illegally excavated or stolen, were sold at the exhibition.
Exhibits include artifacts of high value, such as Buddha statues, ceramics, and gilt bronze crowns and others such as roof tiles, floor tiles and earthen figures. Valuable artifacts are played a role in enhancing the value of artifacts themselves while raising the level of the exhibition. Others are mostly illegally excavated or stolen artifacts that can be easily sold and transported to Japan.
In terms of exhibition contents, Sillayesulpumjeonlamhoe is characterized by its emphasis on Silla and Silla Dynasty and it is the result of considering the taste of Japanese, major visitors of the exhibition. In the colonial view of Japanese imperialism history, Silla is a kingdom occupied by the Japanese once and also a symbol that Japan conquered Silla in the past, although this is totally different from the fact. So that the exhibition aims to emphasize the ancient characteristic of the Silla Dynasty in accordance with the taste of the Japanese, main visitors. This was one of the main ways Choseon artifacts were consumed by Japanese under Japanese imperialism.
