This study aims to propose an inductive evaluation method based on the practicality and coverage and to demonstrate that it can be an objective and effective way to evaluate the adequacy of the French basic vocabulary.
The French basic vocabulary here is a list of words that we have established through previous studies, and corresponds to the A level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Langugages(CEFRL). And we examine how many words of this list are used and how much they covers in three kinds of A-level French textbooks and materials: two A-level DELF textbooks, Le français élémentaire of the Seoul National University, and French basic vocabulary ontology, a set of usage situations and their typical dialogue samples for the French basic vocabulary.
The practicality is the percentage of the basic vocabulary that is actually used in textbooks, and is calculated by dividing its number by the total number of the basic vocabulary. The coverage is the rate at which the basic vocabulary takes up a textbook, so it corresponds the occurences of the basic vocabulary in a textbook divided by the whole occurrences of that textbook.
Our study shows that, in all the three texts, our French basic vocabulary has a practicality and a coverage higher than those of the word list proposed by the A-level référentiels, and doing so, demonstrates that our inductive method based on the practicality and the coverage is not only objective but also effective and valid. We also show that our method and its result can be used to build new word lists for other levels or to develop textbooks more appropriate for the grade.
