This article aims to systematically grasp and organize mutual recognition of North and South Korea. This problem is addressed through quantitative analysis methods using survey results of residents of North and South Korea. However, it is difficult to directly investigate North Koreans based on current circumstances, so we will replace them with investigations of North Korean defectors. Survey results show mutual recognition of the characteristics of the residents of North and South Korea is very different. These differences are due to the perception of South Koreans rather than that of North Koreans. Regarding the characteristics of human beings, the gap between the perception of the inner group and the perception of the outer group was relatively larger in the South than in the North. But when the negative perception of the other group is limited, North and South did not differ. In addition, in recognition of the mutual perception of the residents of North and South Korea, the perception of the North Korean inhabitants of South Koreans was not clearly different according to the demographic variables, but to some extent. On the other hand, the perception of North Korean residents about South Korean residents was contrasted by the fact that there were few differences according to demographic variables. When comparing the residents of North Korea with those of the other groups, the perception of the characteristics of the opponent group is much more influential on the attitude toward social relations with the opponent group than the North Koreans Respectively. On the other hand, North Korean residents' perception of the characteristics of South Koreans did not affect their attitudes toward social relations with South Koreans.

이 글은 남북한 주민의 상호 인식을 체계적으로 파악, 정리하는데 목적을 둔다. 남북한 주민에 대한 설문조사 결과를 활용한 양적 분석 방법을 통해 이 문제를 다룬다. 다만 현재의 여건상 북한주민을 직접 조사하기 어렵기 때문에 북한이탈주민에 대한 조사로 대신한다. 남북한주민의 상호인식, 즉 남한주민의 북한주민에 대한 인식과 북한주민의 남한주민에 대한 인식을 비교하는 T검정에서 전체 문항(24개)의 75%가 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 이는 남북한 주민의 특성에 관한 상호인식이 매우 크게 차이가 난다는 것을 의미한다. 24개 문항에 대해 요인분석을 실시해서 5개의 요인이 추출되었고, 이를 토대로 T검정을 실시한 결과, 남한주민은 남한주민과 북한주민에 대한 인식의 차이가 부정적 요인 2개, 긍정적 요인 1개, 중립적 요인 1개에서 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 발견되었다. 반면 북한주민의 경우, 부정적 요인 2개에서만 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 확인되었다. 요컨대 집단에 대한 인식 전체적으로 보아서는 내/외집단에 대한 인식의 격차가 북한주민보다는 남한주민이 훨씬 컸지만, 상대방 집단에 대한 부정적 인식에 국한시켜 보면 내/외집단에 대한 인식의 격차가 큰 것은 남한주민이나 북한주민이나 다르지 않았다. 또한 남북한 주민의 상호인식에서, 남한주민의 북한주민에 대한 인식은 인구사회학적 변인에 따른 차이가 뚜렷하게는 아니었지만 그래도 어느 정도는 나타났다. 반면 북한주민의 남한주민에 대한 인식의 경우, 인구사회학적 변인에 따른 차이가 거의 나타나지 않아 대조를 이루었다. 아울러 남북한주민들은 상대방과 사회적 관계(결혼상대, 세입자, 친구, 동료)를 맺는 데 대한 태도의 모든 문항에서 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 나타냈다. 그리고 모든 범주에서 상대방과 사회적 관계를 맺는 데 대해 남한주민은 북한주민보다 소극적 태도를 보였다. 또한 회귀분석 결과를 토대로, 상대집단에 대한 인식과 태도의 관계에 대해 남한주민과 북한주민을 비교해 보면 남한주민은 북한주민보다 상대집단의 특성에 관한 인식이 상대집단과 사회적 관계를 맺는데 대한 태도에 훨씬 더 많이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 북한주민은 남한주민의 특성에 대한 인식이 남한주민과 사회적 관계를 맺는데 대한 태도에 그다지 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 조사되었다.
