The study set out to explore the value of comprehensive written corrective feedback (WCF) both in improving grammar accuracy in revisions (editing effects) and in developing accuracy in new pieces of writing (learning effects). Two types of WCF were compared: direct correction (DC) and coded indirect correction (IDC). Three intact intermediate English classes (one DC, one IDC, and one control group; a total of 54 learners and one teacher) participated. The study consisted of 8 sessions and lasted 6 weeks. Students produced three pieces of writing and revised them over a three-week period (from session 1 to session 6). Each group also produced a new piece of writing one week later (session 7) and another two weeks after session 7. The results revealed that comprehensive WCF had a facilitative role in increasing accuracy in both revisions and new writings, and the effects carried throughout the study. DC led to greater immediate effect than IDC, but IDC’s effects became evident later and were superior to DC. The study has a significant pedagogical value for using comprehensive WCF in L2 classrooms.
