Since the fourth industrial revolution, the FinTech industry, which reflects the convergence of finance and technology, has been rapidly growing and evolving. This growth enables many companies and startups to try to develop innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud, and robo-advisor technologies, among others. Moreover, in this age of digital transformation, it challenges the traditional financial industry and existing companies by using increasingly more advanced technologies, such as an Internet-only bank launched in 2017. However, actively taking advantage of innovative technologies has been somewhat difficult for FinTech companies thus far owing to strict rules and regulations. Developed countries, in which the FinTech industry is considerably developed, promote and support this industry using relatively sensible rules. Having recognized some limitations of strict regulations, the Korean government has recently decided to loosen its restrictions. However, some issues arise in that financial consumer protection is more crucial than before, and another system risk could occur. Thus, we suggest that an appropriate balance between innovation and regulation is necessary for the sustainable development of the Korean FinTech industry.
