This paper aims to investigate the word order variation in Chinese compounds. The word order in Chinese compounds is generally V-O-N when the verb is monosyllabic and O-V-N when the verb is disyllabic. After a critical review of previous studies, this paper proposed a new approach to derive the surface form of Chinese compounds by asserting the existence of a light verb and an AgrOP in the syntactic structure of Chinese compounds. We argue that no movement is involved in the process of deriving VON compounds due to the Lexical Integrity Principle; however, there is a movement of the object to the spec of AgrO phrase for an OOVVN compound. It is also proposed that monosyllabic agentive verbs in Chinese are always the lexical roots and need to attach to the small v to receive the [CAUSE]/[DO] feature. On the contrary, disyllabic agentive verbs have the [CAUSE]/[DO] feature assigned in their lexical forms. This results in different movement and consequently different surface word order in Chinese compounds. Moreover, we have preliminarily shown that our analysis of Chinese compounding could also apply to other SVO languages (e.g. English) as well as SOV languages (e.g. Korean).
