The aim of this study is to explore the asymmetry of English and Korean benefactive constructions. In benefactive constructions, English has a single verb, but Korean has a serial verb. Many languages with serial verbs like Korean use a verb ‘give’ to introduce Recipient and/or Benefactive Nouns in the construction. Interestingly, in Korean –cwuta(give) as a case marker is used for introducing indirect objects(Benefactive) into benefactive constructions. In this study, I propose English and Korean benefactive constructions are analyzed as Applicative(Appl) head following Maranz(1993), Mcginnis(2005), Pylkkanen(2008) and Bruening(2010)‘s applicative theory. Unlike English where Appl appears as an empty head, the second verb -cwu in Korean serial verb constructions may overtly appear as the applicative verb and function as a benefactive marker. Through this study, I expand the new approach to analyze the difference between English and Korean benefactive constructions.
