Today, the term “Christian” is the most common and universal name for those who believe in Jesus. It is surprising, however, that the name “Christian” does not appear so much in the New Testament. The term “Christian” appears three times in the New Testament, only twice in Acts (11:26 and 26:28) and once in 1 Peter (4:16). The word “Christian” is expressed here in Greek in the singular form Cristiano,j and in the plural form Cristianoi,. This paper examines the historical origins and meanings of “Christians” by examining the use of Christianos / Christians in the New Testament. For this use study seems to help to clarify the meaning and identity of Christians.
Most scholars agree that this Greek term comes from Latin. The name “Christian” appears to have been given by unbelieving outsiders for the first time in Antioch. The Gentiles seem to have been given the name Christian by hearing the disciples always referring to the person “Christ”. This term is formed from the person Christos (Christ) and can be considered to mean “person(s) belonging to Christ,” “follower(s) of Christ. This would distinguish the disciples from Jews as well as from unconverted Gentiles. Only later did the name Christian become the name that Jesus’ isciples referred to themselves (see 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16).
In the context of Acts 11:26, the disciples were called Christians because in the eyes of the Gentiles they were no longer seen as Jews or Gentiles, but as one new third group of Jews and Gentiles. They were totally different from those around them in their beliefs, worldviews, values, and ways of behaving, and that “difference” seems to have led to contempt and hostility. At that time, the religious and social costs of becoming a Christian were very high. Nevertheless, they followed Jesus Christ because they had values and ideals that they could not give up being Christians, despite all persecution. They were true free men who realized that Jesus Christ was more precious and valuable than anything else in the world (Acts 26:28).
1 Peter 4:16 shows the first step in accepting the name Christian by outsiders as a glorious name that Jesus’ disciples refer to themselves. The name was accepted in a situation of suffering. In the midst of the insults and persecutions of those around them, they must do good among unbelievers (positive meaning) on the one hand, but on the other hand, glorify God in that name by suffering for Christ (negative meaning). Today, Korean churches and Christians will need to restore the uniqueness and identity that Christians originally had.
