As a growing number of states and cities in the United States has enacted smoking bans in public areas, a number of studies have addressed the issue of the impact of smoking bans. This research examines the impact of smoke-free policy on riverboat casino revenues and player admission. Monthly revenues of casinos were collected over a continuous span of 205 months from January 2000 to January 2017. The time series analysis results show statistical significant revenue losses decrease for the state regulated commercial riverboat casinos due to the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which prohibits smoking in public area including casino premises. Graphical comparison with consecutive states’ gaming revenues was also explored. Implications are discussed and recommendations for future studies follow.
