The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of Christian parental education based on the theory of problem behavior in Rudolf Dreikurs. The daily, repetitive, and persistent problem behaviors of children cause psychological and emotional depression of parents and cause depression of parenting efficacy. A weakened sense of Parenting efficacy and emotional depression will have a negative impact on Christian parents’ faith lives, too.
Rudolf Deikurs’ problem behavior theory provides specific psychological motivation for children’s problem behavior and how to deal with it. Alfred Adler believes that inevitable inferiority for all humans can be resolved through the social interest and the sense of belonging. R.Deikurs bases Adler psychology principle on his problem behavior theory. The problem behavior of a child is derived from the psychological motivation to get a sense of belonging, and wants to get a feeling of belonging through the wrong goals of attention-getting, struggle for power or superiority, desire to retaliate or getting even, display of inadequacy or assumed disability. The coping strategies of problem behaviors are based on the social equality theory and lead to the modification of behavior through ‘logical consequence’ and ‘natural consequence’ instead of punishment. His problem behavior theory is actively used in general parental education, and research on positive effects is also being conducted.
In evaluating his theory, R.Dreikurs points to the importance of community and social relations. But the real restoration of the relationship begins with the restoration of the relationship with God. He does not provide the theological insight that human inferiority, existential anxiety, originated from sin. In addition, Christian education should emphasize discipline and guidance from parental authority, although it is powered as a responsible child through logical consequence and natural consequence.
However, Dreikurs’ problem behavior theory provides a new perspective on Christian parental education. It provides detailed insight into the basic motivation of children’s problem behavior and how to cope with everyday problem behaviors. It strengthens parental efficacy, raises self esteem of the child, and stimulates whole health and growth. His theory is able to cope with the complementary role of existing Christian parental education by training specific and practical coping strategies for child’s problem behavior.
