The changes in particle size and shape along the mid-Gilan river channel are investigated in this study. The samples collected from the 6 points along the longitudinal profile of Gilan river, Cheongsong gun, Gyengsangbuk do. The channel of the river is covered with gravels and the mean diameter of the particle decreased downstream. Despite the overall fining of particles, there is irregularity in the fining pattern at some point, due to the tributary input and human activities. A small scale knickpoint and narrowing channel width caused accelerated transport of coarse particle at some sampling point. Particles are coarsened due to tributary influx and influence of channel crossing structures. Overall fining coefficient of sediment particles in the Gilan river found as 0.02km_1 and its lower that those of other reported case of Korea and other countries. It could be the result of the influence of the lithology of particles. The sphericity and Corey shape index(CSI) of particles increase downstream and have negative relationship with mean particle diameter. The indices plotted on the tri-plot and the ratio of the ‘C(compact)’ shape particles are low and those of ‘CP’, ‘CB’, ‘CE’ particles are relatively high. The portion of the rounded particles increased downstream. It is suggested that the increase of the inter-particle and particle-channel bed interaction could be the cause of this change of the shape.
