This study is an inquiry into the Korean researchers specializing in the study of Southeast Asia. It attempts to examine who they are and what they are doing and have done as part of their research. It divides Korean specialists in Southeast Asian studies into two groups or generations: the first generation of Southeast Asianists who began their academic career as a researcher in Southeast Asian studies prior to the late 1980s, on the one hand, and the second group/generation beginning their academic research career after that period, on the other. This study focuses on the second-generation Southeast Asianists in various fields of social sciences such as political science, anthropology, economics, and sociology as well as in history. Moreover, it further divides the 2nd-generation Southeast Asianists into three cohorts and attempts to analyze the between-cohort differences. First of all, this study analyzes the demographic characteristics, occupational statuses and institutional affiliation, academic background (schools and majors), research interests, and research activities (areas of specialty and themes of research) of the 2nd-generation Korean Southeast Asianists. It also identifies the differences in these characteristics among three different cohorts. This study also makes a retrospective reappraisal of the researches done by the 2nd-generation Korean Southeast Asianists in the fields of social sciences. It tries to trace the trend and trajectory of their research activities, comparing them in three different periods: the early 1990s, the late 1990s, and the 2000s.
