This article intends to examine and evaluate Southeast Asian studies in Korea. It is designed to investigate the feasible ways for enhancing the quality of Southeast Asian studies and review all the issues relating to the graduate programs of Southeast Asian studies on the basis of the opinion of graduate students. For the purpose of this article, we examined the necessity and appropriateness of evaluative approaches to academic environment for the improvement of graduate programs and surveyed the opinions of the KISEAS study member. Our research itself cannot be a resolution to the future of the graduate programs of the Southeast Asian studies. Rather, its humble concern is to make a starting point for further discussion with regard to the software and the hardware of the graduate programs of the Southeast Asian studies. The major findings on how to improve the graduate programs are as follows. The programs have to be designed to provide students with broad interdisciplinary training in language and area studies. Also, they should give them a chance to take courses in a variety of disciplines. When it comes to Southeast Asian studies, considerable emphasis must be placed on the field research in Southeast Asia. All graduate students should be encouraged and assisted in their efforts to conduct field researches to learn a lot more than just knowledge. Last but not least, consistent financial, institutional support and eagerness of teachers in education are vital in developing new contents and methods for graduate programs of the Southeast Asian studies.
