Report Errors
The main purposes of this study are to analyze the research trends of Southeast Asian area studies in Japan and figure out their characteristics. It also aimed to examine them by comparing them with South Korean perspectives and propose future directions and implications for Southeast Asian area studies in South Korea. Especially for the research trends in Japan, the study conducted quantitative analysis of the Japanese journal, Tonan Ajia Kenkyu(Southeast Asian Studies), published by Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Kyoto University. It was in the 1960s that Japan started to issue academic journals on Southeast Asia. Since then, Southeast Asian studies in Japan has developed and settled down in unique forms differentiated from those of the West. The analysis results of the journal identified the biggest characteristic, which was that natural science took the lead in early Southeast Asian studies and was followed by social science. Another noteworthy characteristic is that research at the regional level beyond nation-states and further research on regions other than Southeast Asia recorded a huge percentage as well as research on individual Southeast Asian countries. There were very active attempts at generalization through interdisciplinary and comparative researches based on field work, which offers many implications for Southeast Asian studies in South Korea.
