Southeast Asia, lying between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, has seen vivid human contacts or interchange and lively international trade. Furthermore, Southeast Asia has tens of thousands islands and complicated coastlines. Owing to this geopolitical and ecological environments, there have been active piratical activities since long ago. The piracy in Southeast Asia until the 19th century, which was a part of the traditional subsistence activities, was connected with the interests of the traditional indigenous ruling powers. Related to this point, the present concepts of pirate and piracy can not be applied to the ones in Southeast Asia until the 19th century. The piratical activities in Southeast Asian waters until the 19th century is to divided into two parts: Those of the indigenous pirates and those of the Chinese counterparts. The former ones took place mainly in the archipelagic Southeast Asia. The latter ones were those that Chinese who advanced to the Southeast Asian waters made. Considering the fact that Chinese have formed a part of the Southeast Asian society since more than 1,000 years ago, the activities of the ethnic or overseas Chinese should be treated in the study of the history of the pirates in Southeast Asia.
