This study investigates the effectiveness of summary writing lessons on the reading and writing abilities of students. For this study, 40 students in the eleventh grade were chosen as subjects. The experimental lessons were conducted for 10 weeks. During the first five classes, students were instructed about various rules for summarizing and practiced applying them while reading and writing. During the following five weeks, the students were given various articles from English newspapers, and then asked to summarize them and compare their summaries with the examples given by the researcher. To verify the effects of this study, reading and writing tests were conducted before and after classes, and the quantitative and the qualitative changes were analyzed. The results of this study show that the summary instruction and actual summary writing are effective in the improvement of students' overall reading and writing skills. However, although the analytical evaluation for writing shows that the students scores increased significantly in three areas, there were no meaningful improvements of student writing quality in the remaining four areas.
