The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate Victoria de Grazia’s excellent studies on gender politics in fascist Italy. Her studies have long been regarded as one of the pioneering works in Italian gender history. The most interesting issue in her studies is about the relationship between consumerism and totalitarianism. So, this paper attempts to look into some aspects of the coexistence and conflict of consumerism and totalitarianism in fascist Italy with a focus on de Grazia’s arguments. To this end it examines 1) the images (‘mother-wife’ and/or ‘women-soldier’) of the women pictured by fascism, 2) the spaces of ‘modernity’ given for mobilizing and organizing the women, and 3) the various forms of appropriating fascist gender politics and the making of female subjectivity. These examinations show the contradictory nature of Italian fascism amalgamating the contrasting elements (the public/the private and the traditional/the modern) into the totalitarian project.
