Buddhist poetry and songs in Koryo dynasty shows us clearly many aspects of medieval ages literature, which is said interrelations between the literature of the common language of a civilization and vernacular literatures, between the upper classes and the lower classes, between the written literatures and the oral literatures, between the reciting and singing, etc. In the former period in Koryo dynasty, Kyunyo均如 composed Pohyunsiwonga보현시원가 as Hyangga향가, and Eucheon義天 wrote Buddhist Poems佛敎詩 with the common language. Kyunyos songs were based on the Non-obstruction of the Unity of Phenomena and Universal Truth理事無碍 in Hwa Yen華嚴 while Eucheon stood on the Threefold Truth三諦[kong空, ka假, chung中] of the the Tien Tai天台 which was a foundation for his simultaneous disciplining of the Teachings and the Zen敎觀兼修. In the latter period, Zen Poetryt禪詩 of Hyesim慧諶 and Kasa가사 of Hyegeun慧勤 appeared and took the place of Hyangga and Buddhist Poetry in the former period. Hyesim emphasized on the reaching No-minda無心, which is the core of Zen Buddhism, but Hyegeun took the Pure Land Thought淨土思想 in his Zen Buddhism and composed Seungwonga승원가 for the lower people. In the Buddhist poems and songs in Koryo dynasty, we can see distinctly the co-existence and transition of the literature of the common language and vernacular literatures, that of literatures of the upper classes and the lower classes. From now on, I have to study the literature of the East Asia on comparative perspective.
