In rewriting once more Hankukmunhakthongsa (Comprehensive History of Korean Literature) to make the 4th edition, which will be published in 2005, I attach more importance to the relationship between Korean literature and the other East Asian literatures. A new orientation that Korean literary history has to be understood as a branch of East Asian literary history is manifested.
Main points of comparative study are : (l) The medievalization adopting East Asian common written language, classical Chinese. (2) The civil examination to select government officers by literary ability. (3) Didactic poetry in the late medieval age. (4) Society and literature in the transitional stage from medieval to modem ages. (5) Historical position of the novel. (6) Characteristics and of modem literature.
One of the most important results is know the inner structure of East Asian civilization, which offers a wider view point to understand world literary history.
China's characteristics, that written literature began in ancient age and low langage literature developed lately, are manifested in the central countries of other civilizations. The fact that Japanese national vernacular literature played unimportant role from the beginning of the medieval age is a common trait of the peripheries. Korea and Vietnam situated in the intermediate of East Asian civilization, between the center and the periphery.
In Korean and vietnamese vernacular didactic poetries, the problems of understanding and evaluation of living condition, realized with the impact from the center, were reexamined widely with new insight. That was most precious achievement of the latter medieval literature. The age of the transition from the medieval to modem literatures transmitted and widened it.
