The purpose of this paper is reveal the aspects and meanings of heterotopia in Liu Zhenyun (劉震雲)’s novel, Yiqiang feihua (一腔廢話). Attention is drawn to the role of the a monument made of crystal that appears in the work. The monument is separated from the majority of people in that it is the space of a few powerful men. However, hundreds of years pass freely here and often turn into a stage, a theater, and a broadcasting station, where the play is performed and a discussion session is held. Different words come and go, conflicting with different places, and conflict, in the way that the villagers develop their own details on why they are insane and stupid. As places where several spaces are gathered in one place, where the separation of time is accompanied, and where the meaning of the middle layer conflicts, the modified monument implements a form of heterotopia. There is nothing tangible about this work. The characters’ words are considered ‘useless’ on the premise of ‘insane and stupid people’ and ‘no reason’. This makes it more important for the process itself to unfold, cross and collide with each other’s thoughts and stories about ‘no reason’. Although a society exists outside of what is defined as ‘everyday’ and ‘normal’, the correction of heterotopia, which is at a boiling point with reality, is a sign of coincidence. Through this process, it opens a gap in society and strikes the logic of the general and normal, which is acting as an unconscious constant for the separated.
