In this paper I investigate the phrase structures of the -ko coordinate constructions in Korean. To do it, I first examine two kinds of the -ko constructions, -koC and -koS constructions. I present the observed facts that when the nonfinal conjunct is overtly tense-marked or the final conjunct has its own independent, specified subject, the two conjuncts yield the parallel reading, constituting a -koC construction, and when any overt tense marker is absent in the nonfinal conjunct, conjuncts yield the nonparallel reading, forming a -koS construction. However, even when the nonfinal conjunct is not overtly tense-marked, conjuncts can yield the parallel reading if there is a parallelism in semantic relation between them. I show that the two -ko constructions are different syntactically as well as semantically. Based on those syntactic differences, I suggest phrase structures for the two -ko constructions. Among the three main structures for the coordinate construction presented in the literature, the flat multiple branching structure, the spec-complement structure, and the adjunction structure, I argue for the hypothesis that the second is the structure for the -koC construction, while the third is the structure for the -koS construction.
