The speech act of greeting performs a phatic function and, therefore, is crucial in fluent communication. For that reason, it is important for L2 learners who study a foreign language to fully understand the subject. However, so far, no systematic research has been conducted with respect to the speech act of greeting in Korean language education. Both the speech act of greeting among Korean language learners and that among Korean native speakers have been rarely studied. While many researchers have attempted to classify and analyze expressions of greeting in Korean language, the majority of them relied on their intuition or unreliable data such as TV shows, and, even if authentic materials were used as data, the studies rarely involved a reliable analysis framework. The purpose of this study was to classify types of strategies used in the speech act of greeting among Koreans, and examine specific expressions in each type of the strategies, which were, then, compared to similar data collected from Korean language learners in order to demonstrate the difference in the speech act of greeting between the learners and Korean native speakers. This study is valuable in that it provides systematic classification and examination of strategies and specific expressions used in the speech act of greeting in Korean language, which did not receive much attention in previous research, and also collected authentic data based on a survey. In addition, it demonstrated that there is difference in using the greeting strategies between Korean language learners and Korean native speakers, and that some specific expressions used by the former include elements that are potentially problematic.
