This study attempts a comparative analysis between the literal & visual description of the olfactory sense in the novel "The Perfume" written by Patrick Süskind and of that in the movie "Perfume" directed by Tom Tykwer. Süskind‘s novel takes narrative tools like expression through superlative forms and descriptions through negative forms in order to describe the olfactory sense effectively. It also combines words, which are not frequently used together and expresses very effectively the briefness and ambiguity of the olfactory sense. The activity of smelling is even visualized through the use of the so called "Teichoskopie", a theatrical method of reporting news on a castle wall. These configuration methods in the novel can be briefly characterized as "seeing with the nose". Tom Tykwer's movie shows diverse objects in succession, which can easily be associated with smells. The many close-up shots indicate the source of the smells and also explain the difficulty in locating it. The free moving crane shots describe the perception of smells and the track to their origins. These configuration methods in the movie can be characterized as "smelling with the eyes", which is exactly the reverse of the novel's methods. Süskind's novel describes very effectively the world of smell with aunique configuration technique, in spite of the medial limitation of the words. On the contrary Tykwer's movie, although having much more medial possibility of expression, fails in making original flavor, because of the authority of the novel and the expensive film project.
