A perfume, called `the jewel of liquid`, goes with a fashion trend as the last step of fashion since the perfume industry has become a high value-added business. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics and image of perfume in Chanel and Christian Dior that show the differences in fashion. The methods of this study are documentary research and demonstrative research. For the documentary research, mainly previous studies and fashion documents were used to look at the history and sorts of perfume. For the demonstrative research, the perfume pictures are collected from web site of Chanel and Christian Dior to analyze the images of scents, color, and shape of perfume bottle. The results of this study are as follows; First, a perfume is made by dissolving a scent in alcohol and originated in religious rites. Since Hungarian water was known as the first modern perfume in about 1370. France has become the center of the perfume industry in the 18th century, but it was the 20th century that fashion and perfume began to become popular together. Chanel is the one who has strongly led this trend as a designer brand in fashion and perfume in the 1920s, while Christian Dior led a trend in the 1940s by creating feminine perfume with New Look. Second, the perfume also shows a difference as well as Chanel and Christian Dior`s mode. The Chanel perfume`s image is stronger in oriental, whereas Christian Dior is stronger in floral. As for the men`s perfume, Chanel is distributed even in woody, citrus, and oriental, on the other hands Christian is stronger in woody. Regarding the color image, Chanel and Christian Dior women`s perfumes are distributed highly in calm image with soft and active image with soft. Christian Dior women`s perfumes is distributed in hard and active image owing to the blue series. As for men`s perfumes are distributed highly in calm and soft image for Chanel and Christian Dior. For the shape of perfume bottle, Chanel`s is mostly in simple and square, whereas Dior`s is diverse and stronger in soft and complex articulated shape. As for the Chanel men`s perfumes, it shows simple image with most linear shape as well as women`s perfumes. On the other hand, Christian Dior men`s perfumes show simple and soft with hard image although straight line and curve are used evenly.
