Before the internet, it was not much of an issue that countries had their own standards and regulations regarding the media. But in this networked world, where news, views and information can easily cross various nations’ borders and legal boundaries, conflicts over different countries’ standards for media content are increasingly coming into conflict. My presentation and article will examine this issue by focusing on some specific recent examples of such conflicts, including the European Union’s efforts to impose its “Right to Be Forgotten” to material available worldwide; the trial of New York University professor Joseph Weiler for criminal libel in France over a blog post written in the United States; and Turkish efforts to bring charges in Germany against a comedian who insulted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The principles of jurisdiction and international comity will be discussed.
