The Erie Canal, which connects the Lake of Erie and the Hudson River, was built between 1817 and 1825 as a greatest waterway of the day to spur the economic developments of the newly founded nation. It was considered a technological marvel of the time with the milage of 584 kilometer and 83 locks. With the opening of this canal, the United States facilitated its westward expansion, as well as national unification. However, this paper discussed that non-economic goals were also behind this project. The argument of national improvement as a way to construct the "American System" and the ideology of "Manifest Destiny" of the white Americans helped the advocates to push the magnanimous construction plan. Rivalry with European powers on western border also incited Americans to strive for this hard work. Overall, it was the idea of conquest which served as an philosophical background of building the Erie Canal. Long deserted canals have been revived with the growing importance of local heritage and cultural resources. Today the canals are welcomed as a place to enjoy various leisure activities, and to celebrate their historical and natural heritage. This new canal projects romanticizes memory of the canal's past and denies to acknowledge the sacrifices and conflicts the Erie canal once caused.
