The purposes of this study were to compare the "Tentative Plan" from "A Study on a Tentative Plan for “Graphemes Table for the Basic Chinese Characters for Education"(2015) with the "Specification of Common Modern Chinese Character Components and Component Names"(2009), which was set by the Chinese Ministry of Education and is currently in use, assess gains and losses between them, and supplement the "Tentative Plan" for its insufficient aspects based on the results. For those purposes, the investigator first compared the 310 groups and 453 basic graphemes in the "Tentative Plan" with the 441 groups and 514 components of the Specification. There were the following differences between them: 1. Number of graphemes that were found in both of them: 343 2. Number of graphemes that were found only in the former: 3. Number of graphemes that were found only in the latter: 171 The study analyzed the causes of differences between them with a focus on the second and third outcome above and identified the following causes: 1. A gap between the Haeseo style and simplified Chinese characters 2. A difference in the number of characters covered 3. A difference in the perceptions of systemicity of characters and reality 4. Whether the method of layered analysis was used or not 5. Others The study assessed gains and losses between them through comparison and found that both of them failed to observe the "principles of grapheme extraction" set each in a consistent manner and were careless in many parts. The findings, however, bring huge benefits such as searching for ways to review again and supplement the problems with the former and discovering the points that needed specific revision in the increase and decrease of characters and separation of groups. In addition, the findings can serve as basic data to solve the issue of common usage of Chinese characters in the Chinese cultural zone and as important learning materials to figure out the substitution principles of Haeseo and simplified Chinese characters that are the official shapes of Chinese characters in South Korea and China, respectively.
