The time from the end of the Joseon Dynasty to the beginning of Japanese colonial period was an era of confusion and sudden changes. While western religions came into the Korean Peninsula and expanded congregation, Confucianism was shrinking and Joseon Dynasty lost its sovereignty by Japanese imperial invasion. It was a gloomy era. During this era, with a sense of crisis the confucian scholars of Joseon Dynasty eagerly developed "The Movement of Confucius Religion" inside and outside the Korean Peninsula to revive Confucianism as a breakthrough of sovereignty recovery. Under Japanese colonial rule, the regions of Gyeongsangnam-do province in which "The Movement of Confucius Religion" was developed the most were Dotongsa of Jinju Yeonsan and Baesansedang of Sancheong Danseong. At Dotongsa, Hyesan Lee Sang-kyu(1846-1922) and at Baesansedang, Jinam Lee Byung-heun(1870-1940), each led the movement. However, the confucian scholars of those days who were hard trained with Neo-Confucianism`s ideas and systems of Chu-tzu felt greatly antagonized by the way of respecting sages, the way of developing "The Movement of Confucius Religion", the effort to criticize Neo-Confucianism and accept Chinwenhsueh of Dotongsa and Baesansedang. Dosanseowon withdrew its support indicating the problems of Dotongsa and Baesansedang`s way of respecting sages and seowons and hyanggyos in Gyeongsangnam-do province also began pointing out the problems of "The Movement of Confucius Religion" of Baesansedang which led to the failure of The work of Renaissance on Confucianism movement Hyesan and Jinam pursued. Although "The Movement of Confucius Religion" in Gyeongsangnam- do province failed, under Japanese colonial rule, the movement was an activity which showed off academic competence and cultural confidence of Gyeongsangnam-do province nationwide and to the East Asia. Hyesan and Jinam played leading roles. "The Movement of Confucius Religion" in Gyeongsangnam-do province under Japanese colonial rule should be recognized as a way of independence movements through the work of Renaissance on Confucianism and its historic meanings should be shed new light in depth.
