This essay aims to analyze the implications of what it means to be an ideal Irish gentleman represented in Maria Edgeworth's Ormond. Maria Edgeworth, one of the most prolific and renowned writer during the Romantic period, wrote four Irish novels--Castle Rackrent, Ennui, The Absentee, and Ormond. The last novel, Ormond, focuses on the eponymous hero's education and moral growth, following his progress of becoming a gentleman. His education to become a gentleman, however, has a great deal in common with the education for women in conduct books. First, in conduct books and novels that had prescribed for women's behavior, one of the most important point was to endow heroines with a well-regulated heart. Ormond's education also aims to control his passionate and violent temper and shape him as a perfect gentleman with a well-regulated mind. Second, conduct books also emphasize the harmful effect of an undirected reading as well as the importance of the guided reading for women. Edgeworth also gives a detailed description of Ormond's character change as a result of his reading novels. Third, just as middle-class women must be chaste, Ormond must overcome the sexual temptations before his marriage with the ideal woman. Forth, in most of the conduct books and novels, the achievement of ‘domestic happiness' is the final goal of heroines. Likewise, Ormond's accomplishment as a gentleman is perfected only when he obtains domestic felicity. On the other hand, to be a gentleman requires a role in the public sphere--in Ormond's case, he must learn how to become an ideal enlightened landlord to the colonial Irish tenants. Since this novel deals with the complicated issue of the legitimacy of the Anglo-Irish Ascendancy, Ormond's ideal masculinity is intricately intertwined with the Irish historical and political situation, which is also the object of analysis in this essay.
