The British gentleman has been a priceless asset and trademark of the British Empire for several centuries. British gentlemen governed and stabilized Britain internally and conferred great prestige upon it among other nations. But by the nineteenth century the British gentleman received multiple challenges. The centuries-old importance of the gentlemen and their power and prestige did not crumble so easily, but the combined effect of the large number of their own members unworthy of the name－the enemy within－and the shift in the axis of power－the pressure from without－combined to push gentlemen away from the center of British life into the periphery. This paper examines the portrayal in nineteenth century British fiction of that process, and the insight the authors lend us as to the cause of that shift.
