Despite the ever-increasing demands for quality translations of texts on Korean culture, the general level of such translations leaves much to be desired. Keenly aware of the need to build up a strong translation quality evaluation and criticism tradition, this paper explores the possible application of the skopos theory to the evaluation and subsequent revision of translations to see its strengths and potential liabilities by analyzing a translated comic book published by the Metropolitan City of Seoul. Specifically, translation problems are identified and grouped into text-external and text-internal ones to see whether the skopos theory can prove effective in lending a theoretical framework to the solution of translation problems in both categories. By way of conclusion, it is suggested that skopos theory can be effective in laying the theoretical grounds for evaluating how text-external factors are addressed, including information gap bridging involved in translating culture-specific culturemes and incorporating target text readership characteristics into translations. At the same time, the need to complement the skopos theory with other more conventional evaluation criteria addressing text-internal translation problems.
