This study is based on the analysis and evaluation of the leadership of both admiral Yi Sun-shin and Won Gyun, who lead the Joseon army during the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592~1598) Appraised advertent leader admiral Yi Sun-shin and brave general Won Gyun, both were devoted to overcome the crisis of the Japanese invasion of the Joseon Dynasty between the years of 1592 and 1598. As a leader of an organization both had positive evaluations but certain negative descriptions can be found in the Annals. However based on historical records the differences between the general's evaluations can be easily discovered. Based on the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which contain the impending situation of that time and the struggles of king Seonjo and his vassals to subjugate the crisis, we will be shedding new light on the crisis leadership of Admiral Yi Sun-shin and Won Gyun. Describing history is usually controlled by the victor's point of view, but it is clear that the existence of the records themselves have an immense influence. Admiral Yi Sun-shin is revered as a great general based on the many records which explain his whereabouts during the war in full detail. On the other hand, there are only a few records on Won Gyun and most of them are negative. Thus it is hard to understand the true potentials of the general. Therefore, this arouses the importance of basic records when illuminating the state and figures of that period. This study is preferentially based on the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and to understand the circumstances of that time volumes like 󰡔NanjungIlgi󰡕, 󰡔Jingbilock󰡕 and 󰡔Won Gyun Haengeongnok󰡕 were consulted too. Admiral Yi Sun-shin are faithful to the records while general Won Gyun had no records of himself. Based on the relationships between these two generals and Seonjo, the leader of Joseon at that time, we will be assessing their crisis leaderships in the Japanese invasion of Korea.
