Korean society expects its students of English language and literature to learn "practical English." However, this highly academic field does not necessarily lend itself well to such practical studies. Nevertheless, these two methods of instruction need not compete with other. Both can, instead, be incorporated into a successful curriculum through the joint cooperation between the following three majors: English literature, English linguistics and English education. This paper offers a model by which a positive interdisciplinary relationship between the three majors can conciliate more traditional academic studies with a modern practical approach. English literature provides the reading material and the literary structure of the novel. English linguistics presents vocabulary, grammar and the discourse structure of English. Lastly, English education donates schema theory which is considered important in developing reading comprehension skills and its three activities(pre-reading, reading, and post-reading activities). A model for developing reading comprehension skills has been constructed based upon the cooperation between the three majors. In this model, the instructor can teach traditional academic English literature while still providing the student with lessons in practical English. Thus, these two methods of instruction can be successfully taught together.
