The purpose of this thesis is to study the application of English Poetry in practical English teaching. I would argue Literature is the most effective material to learn and teach foreign culture and language. Also, reading poetry is a good means of promoting the English language and extending students’ learning experiences. But in the actual classroom poetry has not been regarded as proper material for English language learning. The reason is the wrong prejudice that English poetry is difficult to learn and to learn English through poetry is non-practical method.
To teach English using poetry has many advantages. Poetry offers a rich resource for input to language learning. It inspires students’ interests and motivation. It can help students learn English with interactive activities. It can be possible to apply practically to the English class. For this goal we need to how to teach poetry ‘well and effectively.’
