Many teachers use movies as effective tools for English education these days. However, most of EFL materials using movies focus on practicing listening and speaking skills. In contrast to this usage, this research focuses on developing EFL materials using movies for practicing reading and writing skills. Theoretical backgrounds, analysis of materials using movies, and sample materials development are included for this research. ‘Motivation', ’Content-based Instruction', 'Output Hypothesis', and 'Writing Education' are researched as theoretical backgrounds, and four materials using movies are analyzed. Through this research and analysis, sample materials are developed.
The main purpose of the materials is to develop EFL learners' writing skills with the support of relevant reading passages and activities for writing. At first, the materials plan to give learners various types of reading inputs such as 'Plot Synopsis', 'Movie Reviews', and 'Historical Background'. Next, the materials encourage learners to write their thought about movies in a step-by-step manner. In sum, the materials encourage EFL learners to write movie review through 'American history in movies'.
