PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects cranial electrotherapy stimulation treatment and aerobic exercise on blood cortisol, beta-endorphin, BDNF and profile of mood states(POMS) in post-menopausal middle-aged women. METHODS: The subjects for this study were 18 post-menopausal middle-aged women and they were randomly divided into cranial electrotherapy stimulation group(CES, n=9) and aerobic exercise group(Ex, n=9). CES was conducted with a microcurrent cranial electrotherapy stimulator for 30 minutes at 100μA and 0.5Hz. EX was conducted treadmill running for 30 minutes at 70%HRR. Blood samples were taken at Pre and Post treatment. RESULTS: For cortisol was shown to significantly decrease at Post in Ex(p<.05) while the brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) was shown to significantly increase at Post in Ex(p<.05). For Tension-Anxiety and Depression-Dejection scores were shown to significantly decrease at Post in CES and Ex(p<.05) while the Vigor-Activity scores were shown to significantly increase at Post in CES and Ex(p<.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that cranial electrotherapy stimulation treatment and aerobic exercise was sufficient to improve the mood. However, cranial electrotherapy stimulation treatment did not affect cortisol and BDNF levels.
