This study is about the appropriate exposure standard value of current digital cameras. The existing analog film cameras set the reflexibility of 18% as the standard value. Such reflexibility is based on the neutral grey density of 50%, and it represents a subject, which is brighter than the standard value, brightly and represents a subject, which is darker than the standard value, darkly. This study assumes that current digital cameras having the process of different image processing in comparison to the existing film cameras might have the same standard value with the film cameras. Also, main research subjects of this study are Nikon and Canon, which are now the most popular, and this study used their DSLR to examine the exposure standard value of digital cameras. According to the results of this study, besides image formation using the light, the appropriate exposure standard value of digital cameras in all processing process was different depending on each camera company. Especially, in the case of Nikon, the standard value was brighter by neatly 2/3 stop; such standard value showed extending dynamic range, reducing noise and improving reproducibility of the color. However, in the case of Canon, only dark and middle tone were represented brightly and there were not significant influence in range and noise. These results showed that each camera companies set the exposure standard value differently and such different standard value influenced on reproducibility of the image to some degree. This study will be helpful for providing theoretical basis about the appropriate exposure standard value, which was not controversial so far.
