Digital cameras currently come with a high resolution video recording feature. Some models even support the 4K UHD standard. There is a need to seek an analysis on whether the limit of resolution of these 4K cameras match the one of digital stills cameras. If the resolution of a captured image extracted from 4K video is similar to the one of a digital still image, it means the video recording feature of 4K cameras can be more powerful a tool in freezing motion than the conventional features of digital stills cameras. The captured images extracted from a 4K cameras can be very useful in the fields of sports, dance and fashion where photographing is done to capture moments. To ensure objectivity, all the experiments were conducted at 4K to compare freeze frame images and still images. Relative evaluation method was used for the experiments, and cameras with full-frame zoom lenses with APS-C sensor were used under identical conditions. The experiment results showed that the lowest limit of resolution of a captured image of a 4K video was at 70% of the limit of resolution of a digital still image while the highest was at 104%. Given that 4K cameras can shoot more frames per second, this study proved that 4K cameras have more advantages in capturing moments than digital stills cameras.
